Why Di Nex Adventure Is at the Negril Universal Film Festival

Di Nex Adventure silent Vertical Theatre at the Negril Universal Film Festival

From 8 to 11 October 2026, Skylark Negril Beach Resort becomes the home of the Negril Universal Film Festival. Four days of Caribbean film, four days of filmmakers in one place, and four days of an industry working out what it wants to be next.

Di Nex Adventure is there for all four days as a festival partner. We supply, install and operate the festival's silent Vertical Theatre, and we are using the occasion to launch something of our own. This is what both of those are and why they matter.

What we are bringing to Negril

We run outdoor cinema across Jamaica. Birthdays in Portmore, staff nights on a rooftop in Half Way Tree, school screenings, community nights, and the CINÉ Collection for couples, our private cinema for two that opens with CINÉ NOIR. Every one of those is the same core skill: we take a full cinema to a place that is not a cinema, we build it, we run the night, and we take it away again.

HD projection. A proper screen. Silent headphone technology, so every guest hears the film cleanly through their own set and the neighbours hear nothing. Premium seating, decorative flooring, battery powered site lighting and fresh popcorn. Anywhere on the island.

At NUFF we are pointing all of that at filmmakers instead of at party hosts, and we are adding a new product, called First Audience, made for filmmakers.

The Vertical Theatre, and what we bring to it

NUFF 2026 includes a silent Vertical Theatre, and Di Nex Adventure is the partner supplying and running it.

We install the whole theatre on 7 October, the day before the festival opens, and we operate it across all four days. Twenty comfortable seats and twenty headsets, with the playback, charging and cabling behind them, plus the equipment inventory, the fault checks and the cable management that keep an installation like this safe in a busy festival footprint.

Silent is the key word. Every patron hears the reel through their own headset, which means a cinema can run inside a live festival without competing with anything happening around it. That is the same technology we use at every private screening we build, and it is the reason an outdoor cinema works on a beach, on a lawn or in the middle of a festival site.

First Audience, in plain terms

First Audience is a private test screening service for independent filmmakers.

We bring the cinema to wherever you want it. We fill the room with recruited strangers who match the audience your film is actually for, not your cast and not your friends. Every attendee signs a confidentiality agreement at the door.

Then, while the film plays, each viewer reacts on their own phone. Four buttons, chosen to suit what is being tested. Every tap is stamped against your runtime, so you see the exact minute the room leaned in and the exact minute it drifted. The phones dim themselves so nobody lights up the screening.

At the credits, eight questions. The same measures studio research has used for fifty years. What percentage rated it excellent and nothing less. What percentage would definitely recommend it. Whether they followed the story. Where they checked out. Who they remembered. And how each of them would describe your film to a friend in one sentence, which is the closest thing there is to a live marketing test.

Within 24 hours you get a private link with all of it. Nobody else sees it unless you send it to them.

Why Jamaican and Caribbean filmmakers need this now

Something has shifted here. There is more money behind local screen production than at any point in living memory, films are reaching cinemas and taking nationwide releases, and a new wave of Kingston production companies is releasing originals straight to a global audience rather than waiting for a distributor to say yes.

That is the good news. Here is the part nobody says out loud.

More films being financed means more films being locked and released into the same festival slots, the same screens and the same buyers. When thirty Caribbean features are chasing the same window, talent stops being the thing that separates them. Everybody has talent. What separates them is whether the film works for people who did not make it.

Around ninety percent of wide release films are test screened before picture lock, most of them more than once, and producers who pay for it describe it as the best money a production spends. Almost no Caribbean independent film has ever had access to it.

That is the gap. That is why we built this.

Vertical filmmaking, and why it changes the testing question

NUFF is running a Vertical Theatre, and Di Nex Adventure is powering it. That matters more than it might sound.

Vertical is not a gimmick and it is not horizontal film turned sideways. It is a different grammar. The frame is intimate rather than epic. A face fills it. Landscape has to be implied rather than shown. Composition stacks instead of spreading. And crucially, the viewer is almost always holding the screen rather than sitting in front of it.

For Caribbean filmmakers this is an enormous opening. Vertical content is native to the platforms where the diaspora actually lives, on a phone in Toronto, Miami, New York or London. It costs a fraction of a traditional shoot to produce. And it reaches an audience without asking anyone's permission.

But vertical is brutal in one specific way. Attention is won or lost in seconds, not in acts. A feature can afford a slow first ten minutes. A vertical short cannot afford a slow first three seconds. The entire economics rest on retention, and retention is measured in moments.

Which is exactly what makes vertical work so suited to the kind of measurement we do. A questionnaire filled in afterwards cannot tell you about a moment. It tells you about a memory of a moment, reconstructed after the fact, which is a different and much less reliable thing.

Capturing reaction while the film is running gives you something else entirely: continuous, timestamped attention data, mapped frame by frame against your cut. For a vertical piece, that is not a nice extra. It is the whole picture.

Integrated validation, before the audience ever sees it

Here is the phrase worth holding on to: integrated pre-release audience validation.

Integrated, because the measurement is built into the viewing itself rather than bolted on afterwards. The room watches, the room reacts, and the instrument is running the whole time. There is no separate research exercise, no focus group, no moderator steering the conversation toward the answer somebody hoped for.

Pre-release, because the entire value sits in the timing. A weak number found at rough cut is a problem you can work on. The same number found after release is a post mortem.

And validation rather than opinion, because what comes back is behavioural. Not what people say they felt. What they actually did, at minute six, with their thumb, before they had a chance to talk themselves into a tidier version of it.

Test at rough cut while you can still change something structural. Test again at fine cut to confirm the fix worked and to generate figures you can carry into a sales, festival or funding conversation. That before-and-after pair is the most persuasive document an independent filmmaker can put in front of a buyer, and almost nobody in this region arrives with one.

What we will not do

We report what the room did. We do not tell you what to change.

That is deliberate and we want to be clear about it. First Audience is not a consultancy and we are not script doctors. You will not get notes from us on your third act. You will get the numbers, the minute by minute read, every written comment exactly as it was typed, and a plain summary of what the data shows.

What any of it means, and whether you change a single frame, is the director's decision. It always was.

The founding year

First Audience is our own service, and for the first year the research and the report cost nothing.

For any screening held on or before 8 October 2027, you pay only the standard Di Nex cinema rate for the night. That covers the projection, the screen, the silent headphones, the lighting, the setup, popcorn and a seat with refreshment for every person in the room. The testing, the capture and the report are included at no charge.

We are doing it that way on purpose. Nothing like this has existed here before, and the fastest way to prove its value is to put it in the hands of the first filmmakers who ask. Founding year slots are limited and allocated in order of deposit.

One thing is chargeable even during the founding year. If you want your own questions asked of the audience on top of the standard set, those are US$350 each with a minimum of three, and the price is published on the submission portal so you never have to ask.

Come and find us at Skylark

We are at Skylark Negril Beach Resort for all four days, 8 to 11 October, at the Vertical Theatre. Come and sit in it, then come and talk to us at the desk.

We would rather show you a real report than hand you a brochure about one. Scan the code at the desk and a full sample report opens on your own phone in about five seconds.

Bring your film, or bring the idea of your film. Either is fine. If you are shooting vertical, that conversation is the one we are most curious to have, because the Vertical Theatre is where we will be watching how a real festival audience actually sits with this format.

And if you cannot make it to Negril, you can put your film into the system yourself, right now, from anywhere. Title, runtime, genre, stage of the cut, and what you want the audience asked while they watch. You get your screening code immediately. No account, no approval, no gatekeeping.

Put your film in front of a real room

First Audience is a service of La Prossima Avventura, the company behind Di Nex Adventure. We bring the cinema, recruit the audience, capture every reaction as it happens, and hand you the full report within 24 hours. Free for every screening held on or before 8 October 2027.
