How to Throw an Outdoor Cinema Birthday Party in Jamaica

Birthdays are most of what we build. Here's how to plan one so it actually goes smoothly.

Start with your numbers

This drives everything. Cost, space, timing, all of it.

Be realistic instead of optimistic. Count who's actually going to turn up, not everybody you might invite. Our minimum is 10 guests, and it's $3,000 per guest on top of the $30,000 setup, so a 20 person party comes to $90,000.

Lock in your final number before the day rather than on it. Anybody added on the night gets charged at the normal per guest rate, because each extra person needs a seat and a headset.

Pick your time

For adults, 7pm or 8pm works well. You need proper darkness for a good picture, and in Jamaica that means after about seven, all year round.

For children, start earlier and pick something shorter. A 6:30 start with a ninety minute animation gets everybody home at a sensible hour.

Our crew arrives two hours before you start. Build that into your day. You really don't want us setting up while your guests are arriving.

Choose the film early

This is the single thing people leave till last, and it's the thing that causes problems.

We can screen anything you can stream or buy digitally that night, signed into your own account. What we can't do is anything still showing only in cinemas. So if the birthday person is set on a brand new release, check with us before the invites go out.

For a mixed age crowd, pick something widely loved rather than something excellent. A birthday isn't the night to introduce your family to a difficult film.

Sort out the practical stuff

You provide the space, a power point, internet, and tables and chairs if there's food. We bring everything else.

Three things worth checking before you book:

Ground. Reasonably level is what matters. Concrete, paving, rough grass, all fine, because we lay flooring over the seating area anyway.

Access. If the only route to the setup spot is stairs, tell us. It carries an access charge and we'd much rather you knew before the quote than after.

Power. One working outdoor point. Test it beforehand.

Food is a separate decision

Popcorn for every guest is already included. Anything past that is up to you.

Plenty of hosts do their own food. Some add unlimited popcorn with a server. If you want a proper sit down meal cooked on site we can arrange a chef, but ask when you book, not the week before.

Be honest about add ons

The ones that make the biggest visible difference at a birthday are the red carpet with velvet ropes for arrivals, and personalised décor built around a theme.

You don't need either. The base package already gives you seating, blankets, popcorn, prop tickets, décor and flooring. Add extras because you want them, not because you think the package is missing something.

Have a rain plan

This is Jamaica. Agree a covered fallback or a reschedule when you book, not on the afternoon of your party.

A timeline that works

Three weeks out: date, numbers and venue confirmed, deposit paid. Two weeks out: film chosen, add ons decided, invites gone out. One week out: final guest count confirmed. Day before: balance settled, yard cleared. On the day: we arrive two hours early. You get dressed instead of setting up.
