Planning an Outdoor Cinema in Jamaica's Rainy Season

Jamaica has two wet stretches, roughly May into June and again October into November. Between them the afternoons can turn in twenty minutes.

Most people react to this by not booking anything outdoors for half the year, which is a shame, because a rainy season evening in Jamaica is usually a beautiful one. It rains hard, it stops, and the air is better afterwards than it was before.

The trick is not avoiding the season. It is planning the night so the weather cannot ruin it.

The one decision that matters

Agree a fallback when you book. Not on the day. Not the afternoon of.

A covered plan B agreed three weeks out costs you nothing and you will probably never use it. The same conversation at four in the afternoon on the day costs you the evening, because by then there is no time to move anything.

What the three fallbacks look like

A covered space on the same property. A verandah, a carport, a hall, a garage with the door open. The equipment that runs on a lawn runs just as well under a roof. If you have one of these, you have a plan and nothing else needs deciding.

An indoor room with the light blocked. Works, with one wrinkle. Anything screened between nine in the morning and six thirty in the evening has to be indoors anyway, and indoor spaces that need blacking out carry a light control fee of $5,000, confirmed by a site visit and payable afterwards so it never holds up a booking.

A reschedule. Agreed in advance, with a specific alternative date already pencilled. A reschedule nobody planned is an argument. One agreed at booking is an administrative detail.

What we can and cannot do in weather

We can set up under cover, on a wet lawn, on damp sand, and in heavy humidity. Decorative flooring goes down over the seating area regardless of what is underneath it.

We cannot set up projection equipment in open rain. That is not caution, it is physics. Electrical equipment and standing water do not go together, and neither does a projector lens and a downpour.

If it is raining at setup time and there is no cover, we move to the fallback. That is the entire reason the fallback exists.

Reading the day

Two things worth knowing if you are planning around Jamaican weather.

Afternoon showers usually pass. The classic rainy season pattern is a heavy shower in the late afternoon that clears before evening. A seven o'clock start often sits neatly on the other side of it. This is why evening events in the wet season work better than afternoon ones.

A wet morning means very little. Do not cancel at ten in the morning based on how it looks. Check again at two. We will be in touch on the day either way.

The months to be most careful with

May and June, then October and November. October in particular, because it overlaps with the tail of hurricane season and the systems are larger than a passing shower.

That does not mean do not book. It means book with a covered fallback identified rather than hoped for, and be slightly more flexible on the date.

December through April is the dry run. If your event is movable and you are nervous, that is your window.

What it changes about the booking

Very little, which is the point.

Deposit terms are the same. Timing is the same, with the crew arriving two hours before for up to ten guests and three hours for eleven or more. Pricing is the same, aside from the light control fee if your fallback is an indoor space that needs blacking out.

What changes is one extra line in the conversation when you book: where does this go if it rains. Answer it then and you have bought yourself the whole season.

The upside nobody mentions

Rainy season is quieter. Dates are easier to get, including weekends that are impossible in December and February. If your event is flexible and you have a covered space, you are booking in the easiest part of the year.

And a film under a roof with rain coming down around it is, for what it is worth, one of the better ways to spend an evening in this country.
