Outdoor Cinema for Villas and Hotels in Jamaica: A Guide for Hosts

Guests forget most of what happens on a holiday. They remember the thing nobody else was offering.

A private cinema on the lawn, the beach or the terrace is that thing, and it is considerably easier to arrange than most hosts assume, because we bring all of it and take all of it away again.

This is written for villa managers, hotel activities teams and anyone hosting people who have already paid a lot to be somewhere beautiful.

Why it works better than it should

Three reasons, and none of them are about the film.

It uses space you already have. A lawn that does nothing after dark becomes the best room on the property for one evening.

It scales to the group in front of you. Two guests or forty, same equipment, different setup.

It photographs extremely well. Which matters, because a guest posting your property at night with a cinema screen glowing on the lawn is worth more than most of what you spend on marketing.

What it costs

Two structures depending on the size of the group.

For a group, the Cinema Setup Package is $30,000 and the Cinema Experience is $3,000 per guest, with a ten guest minimum. So a twenty person villa comes to $90,000, and that covers a seat, cushion, blanket, silent headphones, popcorn, prop ticket, décor and decorative flooring for every person in it.

For two guests, Date Night starts at $45,000 and includes everything for a couple.

Delivery, setup and pull down are in both figures. Parishes outside Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine carry an out of region fee of $15,000.

The five things to check before you book

Ground. Reasonably level is all that matters. Concrete, paving, rough grass and sand all work, because we lay decorative flooring over the seating area anyway.

Access. If the only route to the setup area is stairs, say so when you enquire. It carries a multi level access charge and you want that in the quote rather than on the invoice.

Power. One working outdoor point, tested beforehand. Site lighting runs on batteries so there is no generator noise, but the projection needs mains.

Light. Anything between nine in the morning and six thirty in the evening has to be indoors, in a space where light can be blocked out. Outdoors, seven is the recommended start because the picture needs real darkness.

Noise. Silent headphones mean the sound goes to each guest individually and the property stays quiet. This matters more than anything else on this list if you have other guests sleeping nearby, and it is the reason we can run a cinema on a terrace at nine at night without a single complaint.

Timing around a guest schedule

We arrive two hours before the start for up to ten guests, three hours for eleven or more. Build that in.

The practical version for a villa: a seven o'clock start means we are on site from four or five. Guests who are out for the afternoon come back to a cinema that appeared while they were gone, which is the best version of this.

If they are on the property all afternoon, tell us, and we will work around where they are sitting.

Who this actually suits

Villas with a group booking. Families, wedding parties, corporate retreats. One night of the trip that nobody has to organise themselves.

Hotels with a slow midweek. A Tuesday film night on the lawn gives guests a reason to stay on property and spend at your bar rather than going out.

Wedding parties. The night before, or the night after, when everyone is together and nobody wants another formal dinner.

Long stays. Anyone on the island for a fortnight runs out of things to do in week two. This is week two.

What you provide, and what we bring

You provide the space, a power point, internet, and tables and chairs if there is food.

We bring the screen, HD projection, silent headphones for every guest, seating, cushions, blankets, decorative flooring, battery powered site lighting, the popcorn machine and the popcorn. We set it up, run the night and take it all away.

Food, and where the line sits

Popcorn for every guest is already included.

Past that it is your call. Plenty of properties do their own catering. Some add unlimited popcorn with a server for $15,000. If you want a proper meal cooked on site we can arrange a chef through our partners, but ask when you book rather than the week before.

Booking rhythm

Minimum two weeks ahead, maximum eight months. Your date is not held until a deposit receipt reaches us and we confirm it in writing, so for a peak week move early.

The deposit is ten percent normally, or fifty percent where we source the venue for you.

The recurring version

Most properties that do this once ask about doing it regularly.

If you are running several nights across a season, ask about retainer rates. Three bookings carry a discount, six carry more, twelve more again. It applies to the package price rather than add ons, and it is the only reduction we offer.
